Our First Time Out On The Boat This Season
There’s something special about the first boating trip of the season. After months of cold weather, snow, and staring at your boat parked in the driveway, the day finally arrives when you can hook up the trailer, head to the lake, and get back on the water.
For our family, that day came recently when we took our 2023 Yamaha 222XD jet boat out to Chatfield Reservoir for the first time this year. After a long Colorado winter, we couldn’t wait to get back on the lake and enjoy some sunshine, smooth water, and family time.
Thankfully, Mother Nature cooperated with near-perfect weather, the boat performed flawlessly, and launching and loading the boat turned out to be one of the easiest experiences we’ve had. Of course, it wouldn’t be a boat ramp without encountering a few people who seemed to forget basic boating etiquette.
Here’s a look at our first day on the water this season and why we’re excited for many more adventures with our Yamaha 222XD.
The Long Winter Wait
If you’re a boat owner living in Colorado, you know the boating season can feel painfully short.
One minute you’re enjoying warm summer days on the lake, and the next you’re winterizing the boat and hoping spring arrives sooner rather than later.
Our 2023 Yamaha 222XD spent the winter tucked away waiting for warmer temperatures. While winter has its own adventures, there’s nothing quite like the anticipation of getting back behind the wheel of a boat after several months off the water.
Throughout the winter, we spent plenty of time planning future lake days, talking about new places we wanted to visit, and counting down until boating season returned.
By the time spring arrived, we were more than ready.
BOATING CALORIES DON’T COUNT…ESPECIALLY THE DRINKS. ALL OF THEM..
Why We Chose Chatfield Reservoir
Located just southwest of Denver, Chatfield Reservoir is one of Colorado’s most popular boating destinations.
For local boaters, Chatfield offers several advantages:
- Easy access from the Denver metro area
- Multiple boat ramps
- Plenty of open water
- Beautiful mountain views
- Great conditions for watersports
- Family-friendly atmosphere
Since it was our first outing of the year and Chatfield is 5 minutes from our home, Chatfield felt like the perfect choice.
We didn’t want to spend hours towing the boat to a distant destination. Instead, we wanted a convenient location where we could focus on getting comfortable on the water again after the long off-season.
Preparing the Yamaha 222XD for the Season
Before hitting the road, we spent some time making sure everything was ready.
The beginning of boating season is always a good opportunity to inspect the boat thoroughly.
We checked:
- Battery condition
- Safety equipment
- Registration paperwork
- Fuel levels
- Trailer lights
- Tire pressure
- Engine compartment
- Tow vehicle setup
Fortunately, everything looked great.
One of the reasons we love the Yamaha 222XD is its reliability. Yamaha has built a reputation for producing dependable jet boats, and ours has continued to prove that reputation deserved.
Knowing everything was ready gave us confidence as we headed toward the lake.
The Drive to Chatfield Reservoir
Part of the fun of boating is the anticipation during the drive.
As we headed toward Chatfield Reservoir, it felt like summer had officially arrived.
The weather was absolutely beautiful. Blue skies, comfortable temperatures, and very little wind created ideal boating conditions.
You could tell everyone had the same idea.
The parking lots were filling up, trailers were lined up near the ramps, and families were unloading coolers and gear in preparation for a day on the water.
The excitement was contagious.
Launching the Boat Was Surprisingly Easy
Many boat owners will tell you that launching the boat can sometimes be the most stressful part of the day.
Fortunately, our launch experience couldn’t have gone much smoother.
The ramp conditions were excellent, traffic moved steadily, and before long our Yamaha 222XD was floating and ready to go.
One thing we’ve learned over the years is that preparation makes a huge difference.
When you have your straps removed, gear organized, and crew prepared before reaching the ramp, the entire process becomes much easier.
Because we were organized and ready, we were able to launch quickly and get out of everyone’s way.
It’s a simple concept, but apparently not everyone got the memo.
The Typical Boat Ramp Chaos
If you’ve spent any amount of time around boat ramps, you know every launch day comes with its own entertainment.
While most people are respectful and understand how the process works, there’s always a small group that seems completely unaware of boating etiquette.
We encountered several examples during our trip.
Some people blocked staging areas while organizing gear.
Others stopped on the ramp itself while trying to figure out what to do next.
A few seemed convinced that everyone else’s time was less important than their own.
The boat ramp is one of those places where common courtesy goes a long way.
Unfortunately, not everyone practices it.
Understanding Proper Boat Ramp Etiquette
For new boaters, it’s important to understand that boat ramps work best when everyone follows a few simple rules.
Good boat ramp etiquette includes:
Prepare Before Reaching the Ramp
Remove straps, install drain plugs, load gear, and complete your checklist before entering the launch lane.
Move Efficiently
Once your boat is launched, move away from the ramp quickly so the next person can use it.
Be Patient
Everyone is there to enjoy the lake. A little patience helps keep stress levels low.
Respect Others
Avoid blocking lanes, parking areas, or staging zones.
Know Your Equipment
Practice launching and loading in less crowded conditions whenever possible.
Following these simple guidelines makes the experience better for everyone.
Getting Back on the Water Felt Amazing
Once we left the boat ramp behind, everything became perfect.
The water was calm.
The weather was incredible.
And the feeling of finally being back on the lake after a long winter was hard to beat.
As we cruised across Chatfield Reservoir, it reminded us why we love boating so much.
Life tends to move fast.
Work schedules, responsibilities, and everyday stress can quickly consume your time.
Out on the water, those distractions seem to disappear.
The focus shifts to enjoying the moment, spending time with family, and appreciating the outdoors.
Why We Love the Yamaha 222XD
The 2023 Yamaha 222XD has been an excellent boat for our family.
One of the biggest reasons we chose it was versatility.
Whether we’re:
- Cruising the lake
- Pulling wake surfers
- Relaxing in a cove
- Exploring new areas
- Spending time with family and friends
The boat handles it all exceptionally well.
The twin-engine jet propulsion system provides impressive acceleration while also delivering the maneuverability Yamaha boats are known for.
The spacious layout offers plenty of seating, and the surf-focused design makes it a fantastic platform for watersports.
For families looking for a combination of performance, comfort, and reliability, the 222XD checks a lot of boxes.
Family Time Is What Matters Most
At the end of the day, boating isn’t really about the boat.
It’s about the memories.
Some of our favorite moments weren’t related to speed, performance, or features.
They came from simply spending time together.
Talking.
Laughing.
Enjoying the sunshine.
Watching the scenery.
Creating memories that we’ll look back on years from now.
Those experiences are what make boat ownership worthwhile.
The boat is simply the tool that helps create those moments.
Loading the Boat Was Just as Easy
If launching went smoothly, loading was even better.
As the day came to an end, we headed back toward the ramp expecting at least a little bit of congestion.
Surprisingly, the process was incredibly easy.
The Yamaha lined up perfectly, loading was quick, and before we knew it, we were pulling away from the ramp.
Anyone who trailers a boat regularly knows how satisfying it feels when loading goes exactly according to plan.
After a great day on the water, ending on a positive note made the experience even better.
Looking Forward to the Rest of the Boating Season
This trip was exactly what we needed to kick off the season.
The weather was fantastic.
The boat ran perfectly.
The water conditions were great.
And we got to spend quality time together as a family.
Now that the first outing is officially behind us, we’re already looking forward to many more adventures throughout the summer.
There are new lakes to explore, more sunsets to chase, and countless memories waiting to be made.
If this first trip is any indication, it’s going to be a great boating season.
Conclusion
Our first trip of the year with our 2023 Yamaha 222XD at Chatfield Reservoir was everything we hoped it would be. After a long Colorado winter, getting back on the water felt incredible. The weather was perfect, launching and loading the boat couldn’t have gone much smoother, and we were reminded once again why boating is one of our favorite family activities. While we did encounter some of the typical boat ramp etiquette issues that seem to appear every season, they weren’t enough to overshadow an amazing day on the lake. Most importantly, we got to spend quality time together, enjoy the outdoors, and officially welcome back boating season. Here’s to many more unforgettable days on the water this year.
